UNDERSTANDING WHAT MATTERS

Blancpain’s data-driven approach to reducing environmental impact

In 2024, Blancpain conducted its first Product Carbon Footprint for the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe – a best-selling model that reflects the Maison’s spirit of precision and durability. The objective went far beyond measurement: it was about understanding where the Maison’s greatest opportunities for decarbonization lie.

The carbon footprint was measured in line with ISO 14067 and independently verified by the Carbon Trust. The carbon footprint covers the environmental impact of the timepiece across its entire life cycle – from the extraction of raw materials to the crafting of components, assembly, transportation and end-of-life (cradle to grave).

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms

From insight to action

The results confirmed that the choice of materials is the single largest driver of a watch’s footprint. Through a detailed sensitivity analysis, Blancpain evaluated the carbon weight of alternative alloys and materials for the watch case and movement, identifying potential reduction pathways without compromising quality or aesthetics.

This analytical foundation now serves as a roadmap for supplier engagement, enabling Blancpain to work directly with its value chain partners on lower-carbon sourcing solutions – such as traceable, decarbonized gold and recycled steel – and to guide design decisions that integrate sustainability from the outset.

A timeless perspective

As a mechanical watch, the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe has no energy consumption during the use phase. Built to last for generations, its environmental impact is spread across time – a tangible expression of Blancpain’s philosophy that “there is an eternity in every Blancpain.”

Looking ahead

This first product carbon footprint marks a milestone in Blancpain’s decarbonization journey. Building on these insights, the Maison will continue to:

  • Deepen collaboration with suppliers to access primary emissions data
  • Explore material innovation and circularity
  • Evaluate logistics pathways to reduce transportation impacts
